Paul called the “armor of God” in his letter to the Ephesians. Prayer and the sacraments are an essential part of what St. “The evil spirits who roam about the world seeking the ruin of souls” mentioned in the Saint Michael prayer have surely been busy, but in asking for help we can fight back against them every day. Peter once noted “be sober and watch, because your adversary the devil as a roaring lion, goes about seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). Satan’s idea for our eternal life is one spent with him in hatred and misery and he’s after as many souls as he can get!Īs St. ![]() We are still engaged in that war that has gone for all of human history, in one form or another, between God and the devil.Įach of us has had our own battles against the dark side trying to turn us away from eternal life with our Creator. Satan was unable to destroy the Catholic Church in the 20th century, but certainly our faith withstood terrible onslaughts just from Hitler and Stalin alone. On the subject of resistance, keep in mind that we can and should say the Saint Michael prayer at church or just on our own during the day for spiritual protection for ourselves and for others as well! Father Martin felt strongly that disbelief in Satan and the forces of evil leaves us unable to resist them. One of Satan’s greatest assets is his camouflage, the belief that he doesn’t exist, as Father Martin once noted in his acclaimed book Hostage to the Devil. Priests such as Father Malachi Martin and Father Gabriele Amorth have written extensively of their struggles with demons during exorcisms. Still, we shouldn’t assume the devil is just some cartoon figure. We obviously can’t excuse all our sins and failures by saying, as the comedian Flip Wilson did in a line he made famous, “The devil made me do it!” After all, God allows us to be tempted but gives us the grace and the free will to choose Him and not the devil. (The low Mass, discontinued in 1970 after Vatican II, was said by a priest alone, with no music.) This prayer is not said at Mass today, but in 1994 Pope John Paul II urged the faithful keep to reciting it.Īlthough we tend to downplay the notion of the devil as being too quaint or outmoded today, he does indeed exist and not just as a symbol of evil, or as character in a fairytale to frighten us. Pope Leo XIII saw to it that the Saint Michael prayer was recited after every low Mass throughout the world. Michael has been assigned to fight against Satan to protect faithful souls from him, especially at their death to champion God’s people and, further along this line, to escort them to their judgment. ![]() Note that when we talk about Satan or the devil here we are also referring to his “army” of fallen angels, the evil spirits referred to in the Saint Michael prayer.Īs a special patron and protector of the Church, St. Michael’s very name (in Hebrew, Micha’el meaning “Who is like unto God?”) denotes the war cry uttered in that battle. Michael makes a great general in this fight between Christ and Satan for our souls! After all, we read in Revelation (12:7-9) that “there was a great battle in heaven Michael and his angels fought with the dragon.and that great dragon.who is called the devil and Satan, who seduces the whole world.was cast unto the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.” (Note: we also have added a page for the Litany of Saint Michael) May God rebuke him, we humbly pray and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Divine Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. In the Saint Michael prayer he throws down the gauntlet to “the father of lies” as Jesus calls the devil in John’s Gospel (8:44), by enlisting the help of a very special Archangel: Michael casting Satan (also known as the devil) and his demons back into Hell in his vision, he was so horrified by what he had seen he felt compelled to help defend our faith in this struggle. Executive function deficits are common in ASD, so skills these skills are required too. Evaluation of cognitive skills (intelligence, memory, academic skills) helps establish strengths and weaknesses for independent functioning at home, school, and work. The backbone of a strong ASD evaluation is a very detailed history of someone’s early development that will help uncover behaviors that may have faded or been masked later on. Sometimes people can reach adulthood without anyone recognizing their symptoms of ASD, and, after learning their diagnosis, many people feel relief at being a bit better understood.įor these reasons, it’s important to have a thorough evaluation with a clinician who understands and can recognize all the nuances of ASD. Furthermore, these criteria can fail to adequately describe some people-especially girls and older people-who don’t exactly fit classic expectations or who have learned to mask their difficulties. One person with ASD can have a completely different set of challenges from another person with the same diagnosis, which can make diagnosis harder. Though these criteria allowed even mild cases to be recognized as autism, the broadness of the categories meant a very wide variety of symptoms was possible. These new guidelines required significant difficulty with two broad categories of functioning: (1) reciprocal social communication and social interaction and (2) restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior. Before this, there were different categories of disorders considered to be “autism,” and researchers felt it was more accurate and more clinically useful to describe these different disorders as existing along a spectrum of symptoms and severity. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a term established in the 2013 publication of the DSM-5, the manual psychologists use to diagnose disorders according to specific criteria. The FREE Dolch Sight Word Assessment can be found in my online Teachers Pay Teachers store.įlashcards are ideal for use for either assessment purposes or for drill and practice. They LOVE this! I literally have students beg to be tested. I have the students color in the graph after each assessment so they can also see how many words they are learning. Several options for charting progress are included. In a RtI model, monitoring the student’s progress during intervention is a key component. The student recording form allows for multiple administrations of the assessment. If the student sounded the word out or took longer than 3 seconds then a “-” would be recorded. A correct response is when the student was able to quickly name the word. When you administer the assessment, you will show the student the word and then place a “+” or “-” in the appropriate square. The Dolch 220 sight words are divided into 9 lists. The agreed upon targets for each grade level assessment periods (fall, winter, spring) are contained within this file. ![]() I’ve also included specific directions on how to administer the assessment. It contains the assessment materials, student recording forms and progress monitoring graphs for the Dolch 220 sight words. It can be found on my Teachers Pay Teachers store as a FREE download. When students move between schools, the forms go with them and intervention and progress monitoring begins immediately.īelow is the assessment that we use to assess sight words. An added bonus is that the vast majority of teachers are using the same form! Actually, all RtI tracking and assessment forms are standardized between our schools. Now, beginning mid-kindergarten and going through the end of second grade, all students are now assessed using the Dolch 220 sight words three times a year. We were not all giving the same assessment (some using the Dolch sight words, others using their own developed lists) and certainly not giving them at the same time of year or with the same materials. In each school, giving a sight word assessment was common. We all now have a common vision of what is “normal” at each grade level. The Reading Specialists then took this back to the teachers within their buildings. We pulled together all the Reading Specialists from our districts and came up with common assessments and cut off points that we all agreed to (fortunately, one of our districts had a good model already developed). Of course we use our universal screener (DIBELS Next) however, in making such important decisions regarding who receives intervention, we felt we needed additional assessment data. With such varying views of “normal”, we felt we had to pull together and develop common assessments as well as expected levels at various grades. Within a RtI model, one of the first steps is to identify students at-risk for learning difficulties. We were quite often faced with a situation where a teacher would bring a child to the Child Study Team wanting to refer the child for special education services, however, the child would be completely within the “normal” range if he/she were in the classroom next door. In fact, the idea of what was considered “normal” could (and often did) vary from teacher to teacher within the same building. When I first started my job traveling among the 13 elementary buildings in our ISD, it was plainly obvious that each building had it’s own measure of what they considered to be “normal”. Each building has it’s own unique personality so every day of the week brings a brand new experience. I know you may be sitting there thinking, “I’d hate that”, but it’s actually tons of fun. One of the many benefits of my job is that I have the opportunity to travel to many different elementary buildings. So, if you practice any yoga asanas or pranayama exercises, you are practicing Hatha. To put it simply, you can say all the yoga poses and pranayama exercises can be classified as Hatha Yoga. It is the simpler version (without Yamas and Niyamas) of Raja Yoga. Asana is just one of the six practices in this path. In Samadhi, the practitioner is free from the illusion of form, time, and space. But it is the austere practice of asana, pranayama, dharana, and dhyana to achieve the sublime state of Samadhi, or enlightenment. Generally, people think of Hatha Yoga only as asana (yoga poses) practice. Therefore, Hatha Yoga means the stubborn practice of yoga without the interference of the five senses and the mind. Hatha in Sanskrit literally means ‘stubborn’. For those looking for practical tips, I'll also share traditional Hatha Yoga poses and techniques and show you how to incorporate them in your daily practice. In this blog, I’ll explain the p rinciples of classical Hatha Yoga, its meaning, underlying philosophies, and how this practice evolved into what it is today. Determined to bring the true meaning of Hatha Yoga to others, I opened my own yoga academy in the Netherlands and began teaching Hatha as my Guruji taught me so many years ago. However, when I moved to Europe in 2007, I was surprised to discover that the modern version of Hatha Yoga in the West was completely different from the traditional practice I had learned as a student in India. His classes were strict and followed the classical Hatha Yoga tradition and syllabus, covering all aspects of yoga philosophy, pranayama, yoga practice, and much more. Over the next eight years, I had in-depth lessons with him that challenged me in numerous ways. Apart from Veda lessons, we also had Hatha Yoga classes every morning with our Guruji who came from a respected priest caste. ![]() ![]() I began my yoga journey at the age of eight at a traditional school in India. |
